Al Fincannon

Al Fincannon Al George Fincannon, of Chattanooga, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014. He was one of eight children born to the late Samuel L. and Bobbie M. Fincannon, Sept. 29, 1924, in Knoxville. Al graduated from Knoxville High school in 1942. He served our country proudly during World War II, and upon his return, attended the University of Tennessee, where Al graduated with a degree in chemical engineering. In 1986, Al married Norma Beck. Al had a lifelong career at DuPont Chemicals and worked locally, as well as Wilmington, Del., and internationally. During his work abroad, Al developed his love of foreign travel and he researched the roots of the Fincannon heritage publishing a comprehensive book. He was an active member of First-Centenary Methodist Church, Jaycees, Kiwanis and SCORE. Al established the Fincannon Scholarship Fund at the University of Tennessee to assist divorced women in attending college. Al will be remembered as an honorable man, who was very devoted to his wife Norma. He is survived by his wife Norma Fincannon; two stepchildren, Robert Beck, of Duluth, Ga., and Ellen Newman, of Chapel Hill, NC; his brother Robert Fincannon (Ruth), of Burlington, N.C.; sister-in-law, Imogene Fincannon, of Knoxville; and numerous nieces and nephews. Flowers are appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to First-Centenary Permanent Endowment Fund. The family would like to extend a special thank you to his caregivers at The Terrace at Mountain Creek, caregivers at Home Comfort, and to Hearth Hospice. Services for Al will be held at 3 p.m. today, Feb. 19, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
