John Shook

John Shook CHICKAMAUGA John Henry Shook, 89, of Cooper Heights, Ga., passed away Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer at NHC of Fort Oglethorpe. He was the son of the late William and Katharina Theis Shook. Also preceding him in death was a sister, Ida Jane Park; and a brother, Hal C. Shook. He was born in Fort Sheridan, Ill., and was a resident of Cooper Heights most of his life. He served his country in the Navy during WWII and was an amateur boxer. He was skilled as a machinist and was employed by Wheland and Lockheed. He was an integral part of Shook Stock Farms for the past five decades and was respected for his expertise. He is survived by his sister, Marianne Shook Thornberry; and sister-in-law, Betty Jo Shook. John was also a beloved uncle of several nieces and nephews. Mark (Ona) Shook, Jeanie (Peter) Kasper, Pat Thornberry, Katharina Thornberry, of Cooper Heights. Mike (Linda) Thornberry, of Washington, Dick (Irene) Park, Joanne (Ed) Beck, Steven (Patty) Park, of Maryland and Karl (Sharon) Park, of Virginia. We want to acknowledge the staffs at NHC Fort Oglethorpe, Siskin Rehabilitation, Parkridge and Erlanger for their expertise and devotion in his time of need. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Chattanooga Fire Department Forgotten Child Fund. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 24, 2014, at Chattanooga National Cemetery, with the Rev. Steve Wells officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday and prior to the service on Monday. Arrangements by W.L. Wilson & Sons Funeral Home, Fort Oglethorpe.
