Fonza Barkley

Fonza Alice Miller Barkley, 93, of Chattanooga, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at her home. She was born March 10, 1920 in Bledsoe County, Tenn., a daughter of the late Goliah and Clarice Swafford. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Willard Miller and U.Q. Barkley. She was a member of Brainerd Baptist Church. Mrs. Barkley started one of Chattanoogas first kindergartens at Brainerd Baptist Church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #365 and was active in her church and in many charities. Survivors include children, Jim, (Zena) Miller, Glenn Miller and Star (Mott) Fraterman; stepchildren, Wanda (Ed) Grant and Pam (Marion) Quarles; grandchildren, Amanda Paul, Adam Miller, Jesse Miller, Moussa Miller and Sher Miller; stepgrandchildren, Marley Fraterman, Marius Fraterman, Todd Grant, Keri Grant and Michael Quarles; stepgreat-grandchildren, Leighton Fraterman and Nick Fraterman. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, from the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Rowland officiating. Private entombment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
