Sylvia Bohanon

Sylvia Simonton Bohanon, formerly of Chickamauga, Ga., passed away at her home in Carrollton, on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, following an extended illness. She was born Sylvia Malone Simonton in Chattanooga, on Oct. 2, 1933. She graduated from Girls Preparatory School in Chattanooga in 1951 and completed her bachelor of science degree in education at the University of Georgia in 1955. Sylvia was an elementary and junior high teacher in several Georgia communities and was awarded her masters of education degree from West Georgia College in 1978. She enjoyed traveling and visited many different countries. She was an avid reader and learner, curious and inquisitive all of her days. Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, Fred Huie Simonton, MD, and Valentine Blackwell Simonton, both of Chickamauga. She is survived by her brother, Fred Huie (Martha) Simonton Jr., of Kennesaw; daughters, Donnee Bohanon (David) Cox, of Chattanooga, and Dawn Bohanon (Bruce) Roberts, of Temple, Ga. Also surviving are grandchildren, Adam Brian Turner, of Montezuma, Ga., Benjamin Sean Turner, of Temple, Ga., Kathryn Malone Cox, of Nashville, and Thomas Clay Cox of Chattanooga,; as well as great-granddaughters, Michelle Bradley Turner and Lillian Reese Turner, of Monticello, Ga. Sylvia is also survived by nephew, Fred Huie Simonton III, MD, of Gainesville, Ga., as well as cousins, Carolyn Simonton Southall, of Lebanon, Pa., Susan Simonton Payne, of Barnesville, Ga., and Debbie Simonton Huddleston, of Carrollton, Ga.; and several special friends, including Lynda Williamson and Lynn Stinson, of Carrollton. A Life Celebration will be held at noon on Saturday, Jan. 11, in the gathering room of the First United Methodist Church in Carrollton, with Dr. Jimmy Thurman officiating, and there will be a graveside interment of her ashes with her parents in the Chickamauga, Ga., Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18. Almon Funeral Home in Carrollton, Ga., is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Agape Hospice of Villa Rica, 124 W.
