Eleanor Smartt

Eleanor Overend Smartt, 96, of Bryn Mawr, Pa., died Monday Dec. 23, 2013. She was born to the late Mr. and Mrs. George Duffield Overend (Jessie Brown Thomas), June 11, 1917, in Stevenson, Ala. Eleanor was a graduate of Chattanooga High School and the University of Chattanooga. At the University of Chattanooga, Mrs. Smartt was a member of Phi Beta Phi Sorority, Co-Ed Cotillion, Theta Alpha Phi, honorary dramatic fraternity, the University Players and was elected "Miss U.C." in her senior year. After college, Eleanor was a fifth-grade and Latin teacher at the Lookout Mountain School. She married the late Harold R. Smartt Jr. on Sept. 7, 1940, and relocated to Rydal, Pa., where they lived as husband and wife for 67 years. They raised two sonsthe older of who, Harold R. Smartt III, passed away in 1994. Their marriage was one of true love. They traveled extensively, were avid golfers, consistent entertainers, and valued many lifelong friendships. "Granny", as she was affectionately called by her close family, had a warm and loving demeanor that was admired by many. She played an active role in many civic organizations, including the Abington Presbyterian Church, Huntingdon Valley Garden Club, Garden Club of America and Huntingdon Valley Country Club. She was an avid entertainer, fabulous cook and loving spouse...a lady in the truest sense. Eleanor is survived by her son, James M. Smartt Sr.; three grandchildren, Elizabeth J., James M. Jr., and Walter Polk Smartt; and five great-grandchildren, Ken Jr. and Paige Pagurek, and Margot, Nora and Vaughn Smartt. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Beaumont Fund, 601 N. Ithan Ave, Bryn Mawr, PA 19010. A memorial service was held at Beaumont in Bryn Mawr, Pa., at noon on Friday, December 27. A family memorial service will be held in Chattanoog
