Ardys Soules

Ardys Caroline Baird Soules, 87, of Chattanooga, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Soules, the second of the three daughters of Earl and Merle Baird, was born and raised in Pasadena, Calif. Preceded in death by sister, Janet Telling, she is survived by sister, Nayda Wallace, of Mill Creek, Wash. A Chattanooga resident from 1954 until 1957, when she and her husband, Frank Edward Soules, were called to the mission field of Brazil, where they then served for 17 years, she returned in 1987, after his death. Her autobiography, "Heritage of Faithfulness: A Legacy of Love" (2006), chronicles their ministrys cumulative success, achieved in the course of meeting the multiple challenges, while raising a growing family, of mastering a new language and culture; and then, in the United States, of ministering to students from abroad, under the auspices of International Students Inc., a work she carried on alone for seven years. She is survived by her six children, Terrill (Foster) Soules, of Atlanta, Dale (Janet Tallman) Soules, of Seattle, Wash., Randall (Virginia) Soules, of Chattanooga, Shelley (Dieter) Schmidt, of Japan, Linda Soules, of Chattanooga and Baird (Carol) Soules, of Holyoke, Mass.; 11 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; one great-grandson; and one stepgreat-grandson. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014 at the funeral home. A Memorial Service will be at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at First Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga (554 McCallie Ave, Chattanooga, TN 37402) with Rev. Chris Ehlers officiating.
