Juanita Nies

Juanita Reed Nies, 92, passed away peacefully to be with our Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at Morning Point Assisted Living in Hixson. Juanita was born Oct. 1, 1921 in Scottsboro Ala., where she grew up and worked in the Bank with her father, C.O. Reed. She attended Wheaton College where she met Leon H. Nies. They married in 1945 and quickly moved to San Diego where Leon was stationed in the U.S. Navy. They lived with other enlisted families at the Hotel Del Colorado. Juanita often reminisced about this time in her life. They raised their son in Michigan and later moved to Archbold, Ohio. Juanita was deeply passionate about her faith and relationship with the Lord, which was central to her life, and communicated this with those around her. She was active in her local church and touched many lives through devotions and Sunday School. She also had an adventurous spirit as demonstrated by her taking her first motorcycle ride at the age of 85 with her grandson, Stephen Nies. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Flavia; as well as her husband, Leon. The surviving family rejoices that Nannie, as she was affectionately called by her grandchildren, is now in heaven with the Lord and her loving husband. She is survived by her son, Charles (Mickey) Nies and wife, Donna, of Hixson as well as her grandchildren, Joi, Stephen, Noel, Lara, Jessica and Emily; and several great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the individual caregivers and the staff of Morning Point and Caris Hospice for the wonderful and compassionate care she received. Graveside services will be held at 5 p.m. EST today at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Scottsboro, Ala., with Rev. Robert Johnson of Hixson Presbyterian Church officiating.
