Rebecca Gowen

Rebecca Thurmond Crow Gowen, 87, formerly of Rossville, passed away Wednesday Jan. 22, 2014. She was born Sept. 5, 1926 in Murray Ky., to the late Cecil Heron Thurmond and Altha Mae Holcomb Thurmond. She was a graduate of Murray High School and studied at Murray State University before moving to Chattanooga to begin her career with the Tennessee Valley Authority. She retired after 28 years of civil service. She volunteered many hours both with the Chattanooga Community Kitchen and with Memorial Hospital. She was a lifelong church goer and a member of Ascension Lutheran Church of East Ridge. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Elizabeth Jones, of Murray Ky.; brother, J. Benjamin Thurmond, of Richland, S.C.; first husband, William C. Crow and second husband Guy M. Gowen, both of Rossville. Surviving are her daughter, Mary Anne (Walt) Schubert, of Kathleen Ga.; god daughters, Julie Curd, of Rossville and Christy Smith, of Ringgold; stepdaughter, Sylvia Gardenhire (Todd), of Chattanooga; stepson Bill (Vicki) Swan, of Dunlap Tenn.; stepgrandsons, David Smotherman and Bill (DeAnn) Swan III; stepgreat-grandsons, Parker Swan and Mason Swan; and many nieces and nephews. She will be sorely missed by the many lives she touched. The funeral has been rescheduled to 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home, Battlefield Parkway. Interment will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home.
