Dorothy Robbs

Dorothy Virginia Wilkins Robbs, 89, passed away on July 1, 2014, at a local healthcare facility. She was born on Sept. 3, 1924, to Samuel and Iona Wilkins. Dorothy graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, Morristown Junior College and Clark College. Upon graduation from college. She first taught in the Cleveland, Tenn., Public School System. She then taught 38 years in the Chattanooga Public School System. Dorothy was a devoted member of Pilgrim Congregational Church where she served as church council corporate secretary, president of the Ladies Guild and member of the Thursdays Child meditative group. She was a Golden Life member and past president of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. She was also past president of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women and Church Women United. She was a member of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Retired Teachers Association and the Clark College Alumni Association. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Robbs Jr. She was the sister of the late Frances, Hudson, Pauline Frazier, Margaret Reed, Arthur A. Wilkins and Samuel W. Wilkins. She leaves to cherish her memory, a devoted daughter, Vanessa Lucerne Robbs; a loving niece, Julia Cammon; nephew, William Van (Doris) Frazier; a host of relatives, life-long friends and treasured acquaintances. Funeral Services will be held at noon on Monday, July 7, at Pilgrim United Congregational Church with Rev. Dr. David Brown officiating. Interment: National Cemetery. The body will lie in state after noon today. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will hold the Omega Service at 5:30 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 68 p.m. today, July 5, at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.
