Stanley Harris

Stanley B. Harris, 90, passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2014. He was born Feb. 26, 1924, near Rockholds, Ky. He left Kentucky and began working in 1941 at the K-25 plant in Oak Ridge, where he worked for 48 years. He left Oak Ridge and moved his family to the Norwood community in Knoxville in 1954. His family, along with several other families, helped to establish the Norwood Church of Christ on Merchants Road in Knoxville, where he served as a deacon for many years. He was also heavily involved in overseeing the construction and landscaping the grounds of the present building on Central Ave Pike. He was a Kentucky Colonel and loved "The Big Blue". Stanley played basketball at Woodbine HS and for Union Carbide in Oak Ridge. He coached community baseball and basketball teams and refereed high school and recreation basketball for many years. Stanley and his brothers competed in the Tennessee Senior Olympics in the 1980s and in 1949 won the "National Family Basketball Tournament" which was held in Wilson, N.C. He loved his Church, family and friends, was always willing to jump in and help and had a strong work ethic and faith till his last breath, which is synonymous with "The Greatest Generation". Preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Brock Harris; daughter, Annette Harris Evans; four brothers and four sisters. Survived by sons, Rick (Angela) Harris, Kendall (Kim) Harris; granddaughters, Hillary (Heath) Rogers, Hope (Ryan) Smith, Jennifer (Scott) Hannigan, Courtney Harris; great-grandchildren, Ethan, Ella and Eva Rogers and Preston Hannigan; son-in-law, Danny Evans; and brothers, Jack (Linda) Harris and Glennis (Alice) Harris; as well as many other special cousins, nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday, July 12, 2014, at Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel at 1421 N. Broadway in Knoxville. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. with Minister Bob Cowles officiating. Entombment to follow at Sherwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Norwood Church of Christ, 6001 Central Ave. Pike, Knoxville, TN 37912.
