Evelyn Cissna

Evelyn Virginia Brown Cissna, 94, passed away peacefully on her 71st wedding anniversary, Wednesday, July 9, 2014, in her home. She was born Dec. 21, 1919, here in Chattanooga. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Ethel Brown; and her sister, Betty Jane Brown. After graduating from Chattanooga High School, Virginia attended the University of Chattanooga where she was an active Phi Mu. She was a mathematician with TVA and later taught seventh grade math at Girls Preparatory School until retirement. Virginia loved her church, First Baptist, where she was baptized at the age of seven and remained a member all of her life. She enjoyed playing the piano and served as pianist for several of the Sunday school classes over the years. She is survived by her husband, Charles; and two daughters, Carolyn Pettefer (husband, Sterling) and Peggy Parker; five grandchildren, Matthew Pettefer, Laura Day, Ginny Welchel, Stacy Pettefer, and Charly Castelbuono; and three great-grandchildren. A visitation with memorial service will be held from 1:30 until 3 p.m. Saturday, July 19, 2014, in the Chapel of Chattanooga First Baptist Church, Golden Gateway with Dr. Thomas Quisenberry officiating.
