Joseph Clark

Joseph H. Clark, 93, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at his home. He was an active member of Brainerd United Methodist Church, serving in many leadership positions and the Chancel Choir. Mr. Clark taught the Friendship and Chancel Choir Sunday School Classes. He was a proud alumnus of Berry College and UTK, was inducted in the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and also conducted post-graduate studies at Ohio State University. Joseph was a veteran of WWII serving as an officer in the U.S. Navy, taught economics at UTK, and retired from Volunteer State Life Insurance Co. as a Certified Life Underwriter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Schoolar Clark; and a son, Steven Clark; brothers, Bromley, Lemuel, Stafford, Merrill and Jere Clark, and a sister, Abbie McElwain. Survivors include his son, Warren (Olivia) Clark; three daughters, Catherine Clark (Brad) Nance, Barbara Clark and Alice Marie Clark (Barny) Danks; daughter-in-law, Donna Clark; grandchildren, Sharon Calvert, Susan Walker, Christopher Acuff, Matthew Clark, James and Steven Nance, Trey, Clark and Will Danks; great-grandchildren, Julia Calvert and Jack Augustine; sisters-in-law, Martha Clark and Frances Clark; brothers-in-law, Bernard McElwain and Larry Schoolar; many, beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. Burial will be at Brainerd United Methodist Church Cemetery at 11 a.m. Friday. The family will receive friends at the church from 11:30 a.m.1 p.m. on Friday followed by the funeral service at 1 p.m. with Dr. Dennis Flaugher and the Rev. Gordon Ridenour officiating.
