Bill Huffstutler

Julius Billy Huffstutler, 81, of Chattanooga, died on Monday, July 21, 2014. Born in Trafford, Ala., on Nov. 19, 1932, to the late Benjamin H. Huffstutler and LaBerta Garrison Huffstutler, Bill was a graduate of Phillips High School in Birmingham, Ala., and the University of Alabama. He graduated with a degree in accounting, having served as president of the accounting honor society, Beta Alpha Psi. He was a member of the AFROTC and named most outstanding cadet at Alabama. He was commander of the Arnold Air Society. Following graduation from Alabama, Bill served as a Captain with the United States Air Force. His service time was spent at radar sites in Anchorage, Alaska, and Lookout Mountain, Tenn. While stationed on Lookout Mountain, Bill met his future wife, Peggy, on a blind date. They were married six months later and have been married for 56 years. After marriage, they lived for a short time in Leeds, Ala., where Bill joined the family business, Huffstutler Chevrolet. Next, they returned to Chattanooga and Bill began a career in banking with American National Bank. He was promoted to executive vice president in 1980 in charge of the total operation of the new data processing division. Due to bank mergers, Bill worked for Third National Bank in Nashville for five years and then SunTrust in Atlanta for ten years. Following his retirement from banking, Bill worked as a consultant with The Information Management Forum. Bill and Peggy returned to Chattanooga in 2000 where Bill served as finance chairman on the board of the Heritage Landing condominium association. He was a member of First-Centenary United Methodist Church. He served as chairman of the board of trustees for First-Centenary and belonged to the Morgan Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Alabama Alumni Club and at one time served as president. Bill belonged to The Hunter Museum of American Art, Arts Build, Chattanooga Theatre Center, and The Walden Club. His favorite pastime was golf and he played wherever he traveled. Survivors include his wife, Peggy Scoggins Huffstutler; three children, Laura (Matthew) Lonergan, of Nashville, Stuart (Katie) Huffstutler, of Atlanta, and Julie (David) Rutter, of Nashville; grandchildren, Drew Lonergan, Zach Rutter, Graeme Rutter, Thomas Rutter and Emily Rutter (the granddaughter he called "Precious"), all of Nashville; brother, Charles Owen Huffstutler, of Leeds, Ala. The family wishes to acknowledge Bills kind-hearted caregiver, Danny Shipley. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday at the Chattanooga Funeral Home, East Chapel, 404 S. Moore Road, East Ridge. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 25 at First-Centenary United Methodist Church with Dr. Linda McDaniel and Dr. David Harr officiating. Members of the Morgan Sunday School Class will serve as pallbearers.
