Myrlan Johnson

Myrlan Edwin Johnson, 84, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 23, 2014, surrounded by family. Myrlan was born to J. Orie and Anna Curtis Johnson on June 13, 1930. He was raised in Bledsoe County, Tenn. He served three years of for his country in the United States Army as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division during the Korean War. Upon receiving Honorable Discharge from Service he went north for work. The suburbs of Chicago was his home until he retired to Carthage, Tenn., in 1989. Due to illness he chose to live the last three years-nine months in Williamson County to be near his daughter. He loved laughter and family, and was loved by all. He also enjoyed his grandchildren and his dogs. Some of his favorite pastimes were playing cards, and he enjoyed going to antique and yard sales. He particularly enjoyed the Highway 127 yard sale. He spent time attending church at his assisted living facility. Myrlan was preceded in death by his parents, his son, John Johnson; two brothers, J. Orie Johnson Jr., Milton Dion Johnson; and sister, Juanita J. Watson. Survivors include his daughter, Marlene J. Handley, of Franklin; grandsons, Louis (Emily) Johnson, of Dickson and Johnny Johnson (Mindy Horton, lady friend), of Carthage; granddaughter, Cindy (Robert) Tedrow, of Carthage; great-grandchildren, Samantha Williams, Michael Williams, Ryan Williams, Johnny Robert (J.R.) Tedrow, Cody Johnson and Lily Johnson; his former wife and dear friends, Betty Garrett; Bryan (Sandy) Culpepper, James Culpepper, Stephanie Hughes. Other survivors include two brothers, Alvin Johnson and Wayford (Evelyn) Johnson; three sisters, Shirley (Junior) Hankins, Darlene (Carlos) Smith, all of Pikeville and Rowena (Kenneth) Rhodes of Graysville; several nieces and nephews, and many friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 27, 2014, in the chapel of Pikeville Funeral Home. The funeral will be officiated by Brother Rudy Oakes and Brother Johnathan Hankins (great-nephew). Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today, July 26. Burial will be in Blackburn Cemetery.
