Carrie King

Carrie M. Crutcher King, 86, of Lafayette, passed away at home on Monday, June 2, 2014 at 12:41 p.m. Born Oct. 30, 1927 in Chattanooga, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Searcy Crutcher and Elizabeth Bone Crutcher. She was a graduate of Howard High School in Chattanooga. She has resided in Lafayette since 1956. Her marriage was to James King in 1953 in Chattanooga and he preceded her in death on Sept 26, 2008. Carrie worked at St. Elizabeth Medical Center for over 30 years, retiring in 1993. She was a member of Second Baptist Church where she was a member of the Senior and Combined Choirs. She was also a member of the Second Baptist Womens Missionary Club and the Mary L. Club under the Federation of Colored Womens Club. At the 140th anniversary of the Second Baptist Church, Carrie was recognized as one of the "Mothers of the Church" and a 50 year and life member. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening while her husband was living. Surviving are her four children, Joel Frederick King, of Bloomington, Ill., Michael F. King, of Chicago, Ill., Cynthia E. King Partridge, (husband, Brian), of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Steven L. King, of Lafayette; a stepson, James Mayfield, of Chattanooga; two sisters, Bettye North, of Los Angeles, Calif., and Joyce C. Stovall, of Chattanooga; three grandchildren, Justin Swain, Danielle Partridge and Paige Partridge; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah King-Swain; two sisters, Virginia Gillespie and Elnora Crook; and a brother, Willie James Crutcher. Visitation Saturday, June 7, 2014, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Second Baptist Church, 2925 S. 18th St., Lafayette, with the funeral service to follow at 1 p.m. Pastor Ronald Harris, a family member from Chattanooga, delivering the eulogy, Deacon Chuck Scott and Deacon John Young officiating. Burial to follow at Spring Vale Cemetery. Repast at Second Baptist Church following the cemetery services. Memorial contributions may be made to Second Baptist Church.
