William Pettyjohn

William Harold Pettyjohn, 93, of The Heritage, Raleigh (formerly of Chattanooga) passed away on Monday, June 2, 2014, after a short illness. Harold was born to James and Cordella Pettyjohn on Jan. 11, 1921 and grew up in Wilkes County, N.C. with his 13 siblings. He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Edith Chambers Pettyjohn; his second wife, Mary Helen Guffy Pettyjohn, of Chattanooga; and his 13 siblings. Harold is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Cheryl Pettyjohn, of Raleigh and William Jr. and Lori Pettyjohn, of Lancaster, Calif. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Shiloh and Jessica Pettyjohn, of Glendale, Calif.; Nicia Pettyjohn, of San Francisco, Calif.; and James and Nora Pettyjohn of Los Angeles, Calif. Harold was blessed to have a beautiful great-granddaughter, Jade Pettyjohn, of Glendale, Calif.; several nieces, nephews and special friends, Dave and Dot Clum. He was a devoted father and grandfather and he will be missed. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as an airplane mechanic in Europe. He was a longtime member and Deacon of Red Bank Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Red Bank Masonic Lodge #717 for over 50 years. As an Alhambra Shriner, he volunteered his time driving sick children to the Shriners Childrens Hospital. Harold worked as a machinist, tool and die maker and manufacturing engineer, retiring from ABB in 1982. A service to celebrate Harolds life is planned for 2 p.m. Friday, June 6, at The Heritage, 1200 Carlos Drive, Raleigh. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Inurnment will be in Dennyville Cemetery in Ronda, N.C., at the convenience of the family.
