Dick Dengler

Richard "Dick" Frederick Dengler, 81, died May 12, 2014. He was born Aug. 14, 1932, to Fred and Margurite Dengler in Rochester, N.Y. A Navy Veteran and retired detective for the Miami-Dade Police Department, Dick followed his dream and brought his wife, Mary Taylor, who he married on Sept. 25, 1963, in Hialeah, Fla., to Rossville, and built their 'Cabin with a view." Not resting on his laurels, Dick served the community as lieutenant for the Walker County Sheriffs Department for 10 years; was a charter member of the Georgia Chapter Nine Blue Knights and a member of the Scenic City Motorcyclists; was a guest writer for the local motorcycle magazine; and participated in a weekly radio show. He was also active in supporting our veterans through the Rolling Thunder rides and other group activities. In addition, Dick attended Oakwood Baptist Church and was active with the Bikers on a Mission group. But as involved as he was in all of these activities, there was one program, which he was co-founder of: The Al Millard Stocking Full of Love that he was most proud of. Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; his father, Fred; and his mother, Margurite. He is survived by his sister, Beverly Overly, of Jacksonville, Fla.; her children, Dutch Overly, Anchorage Alaska, Rob Overly, Jacksonville, Fla., Debi Overly, Jacksonville, Fla., Mark Overly, Denver, Colo.; cousins, Bob Dengler, San Diego, Calif. and Bill Dengler, Deltona, Fla. A memorial motorcycle ride will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 2014, starting at Oakwood Baptist Church to Chattanooga National Cemetery and returning to the church where a memorial service will be held at 11 am. Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 16, in Chattanooga National Cemetery. There will be a procession and motorcycle ride leaving the Big Lots parking lot in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., at 11 a.m. Monday to escort Mr. Dengler to his final resting place. In lieu of flowers and in honor of Dick's efforts, a donation can be made to: Al Milliard Stocking Full of Love, c/o Walker County Sheriff Department, P.O. Box 767, LaFayette, GA 30728.
