Arlene Hester

Arlene Cochran Dunn Hester, 89, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2014. I was born Nov. 18, 1924 in Atlanta, to Horace Daniel and Janie Dell Malone Cochran. Then came Ann Cochran Hall, June Cochran Nix, Barbara Cochran Justice, and brother, Horace Malone Cochran. There were two half-brothers, Dan and Derry Cochran. At that time of the 1929 Depression, my parents made many moves which required different schools to attend. After we made the move to Chattanooga, I attended and graduated from Central High School. Harrison A Dunn from Tellico Plains, Tenn., and I married in 1943. First, our son Harrison David was born and next came our daughter, Pamela Arlene. David and Carol Brock Dunn were blessed with two daughters, Kristi who is married to Brice Long, and Michele who is married to Aaron Roach. Aaron and Michele have one son, Austin Roach. David owns M&D Power Constructors, Inc., and is now married to Daniela Dunn. They reside in Chattanooga. Pamela married Dr David Brockwell Kidd and has two children: Brock who is married to Corinne Kidd and has three children, Harrison, Mary Katherine, and Ella Grace; And Katherine who is married to Dr. Benjamin Cannon and has two children Charles and Abigail Cannon. They all reside in Nashville. Harrison spent many years in construction and received recognition for installing many Hydro-plants around the country. His work required time spent in many locations where we made many friends and David and Pamela had the experience of many interesting schools. Harrison died Easter week of 1984. Our lives had been full. I continued a busy life more travels volunteer work at Contact since 1972 church involvement with Adult Womens Sunday School Class Essie Rogers and I made hundreds of visits to the sick and shut-ins I helped organize an Adult Prime Timers at New Hope Presbyterian; We made many interesting trips and had numerous meetings. Then, Herbert Ogburn Hester and I met through my son David. Herb had lost his wife and was from a small family in Florence, Ala. He had two sisters, Bernice and Eunice. There were no children in their family. Herb and I were married in a small but unique service at Pamela and Davids home. Herb was a retired Major from the Air Force and accepted a position with Common Arc which required much travel all over the States and Canada More friends and acquaintances! We traveled to many countries as Harrison and I had done. My family had no idea how valuable Herb would be to all of us. He came into an extended family and accepted us as we were. The experiences with the babies and the young children and adults new to him what dedication!! I am writing my own obituary on this our eighteenth anniversary! How could my life have been so blessed? Only through God!!! Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the New Hope Presbyterian Church, 7301 Shallowford Road with Dr. David Kidd officiating. The family will receive friends from from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service today at the church. Please share your memories at: ChattanoogaEastChapel.com.
