Hardie Brock

Hardie Tharpe Brock, 86, died Friday, March 7, 2014, at her daughters home. She was born April 11, 1927 to Clarence William Tharpe and Mary Campbell Tharpe. A lifelong resident of Chattanooga, Hardie was graduated from GPS in 1944, serving as Maid of Honor in May Day. She earned her B.A. degree from Randolph Macon Woman's College and was Queen of the Cotton Ball in 1949. In 1964 Hardie began her 13 year career at GPS as a Latin teacher, secretary of Development, and later secretary of Alumnae and Admissions. She then worked for the United Way of Chattanooga and Dr. James Phillips and Dr. Frank Trundle, Dentists. Hardie volunteered as a Pink Lady at Erlanger Hospital along with her sisters. She was active in the Junior League and the Signal Mountain Garden Club and was a dedicated volunteer at the Community Kitchen for many years. She was an avid bridge player with dear friends she had known from childhood. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard Gwyn Brock; her sisters, Barbara T. Nichols and Dorothy T. Peerson. Survivors include her daughter and longtime caregiver, Barbara Tharpe Brock; daughter, Susan Brock Fry (Tom), Brookfield, Ohio; grandson, Lance Richard Brock; nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Susan Bryan and the staff of Amedisys. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today, March 11 at St. Pauls Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Suzanne Smitherman officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chattanooga Audobon Society, 900 N.
