Dalton Noblit

Welch Noblit Dalton Welch Noblit, 92, passed away on Sunday night, March 16, 2014, at his assisted living residence in Chattanooga. Born July 28, 1921, in West Point, Tenn., he was the son of the late Dalton Noblit and Ella Elizabeth "Dot" Welch Noblit. Welch attended Freed Hardeman University and graduated from Indiana Institute of Technology. After serving as an ensign in the Navy during World War II, he began his career as a civil engineer with TVA. He retired from TVA after 35 years and dedicated his next 30 years to serving his community and family, especially his grandchildren, to whom he was "Tatty." In the words of his grandson, "Our grandfather understood what he was called to be, which was a servant to others. First and foremost he served God, so we know is now has peace. He served our country, and he served his community in Chattanooga by working on programs like R.I.D. (Remove Intoxicated Drivers) and GASP (Group Against Smoking Pollution). Finally, his greatest service was to his family, both in the selfless and loving care he provided to his wife for many years after a serious accident and as the active contributor in the lives of his grandchildren." Welch is survived by his wife of six years, Margaret Jones Noblit, of Lawrenceburg, Tenn.; and his daughter and two sons, Suzanne and Charles Forlidas, of Marietta, Ga.; David and Jenny Noblit and John and Susan Noblit of Chattanooga. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren, Eric Scott, Adam Scott, Scott Noblit, Nevelyn Noblit Trumpeter, Jason Noblit, Jack Noblit, Gini Noblit Slatton, Taylor Morgan, Chase Morgan, Lindsey Frost-Cleary, as well as six great-grandchilren. Welch is predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Virginia Friend Noblit; and his brothers, Robert Noblit and Ray Noblit. Welch was surrounded by family and friends on his 90th birthday in 2011, so his family will have a private graveside service. His grandchildren will serve as his pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Nancy Noblit Scholarship Fund at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga or First Christian Church, 650 McCallie Ave., Chattanooga. Arrangements have been entrusted to Chattanooga Funeral Home-North Chapel, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, TN 37343. Please share your thoughts and memories at www.chattanooganorthchapel.com.
