Martha Pope

Martha Beverly Pope, 91, of Chattanooga, passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2014. Born in Knoxville, she graduated from Chattanooga Central High School where she was Salutatorian and Miss Central. She attended Vanderbilt University where she was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi, and also at the University of Tennessee. She was the wife of Dr. Robert E. Pope who preceded her in death and mother of Libby Pope Evans who also preceded her in death. She was the daughter of Martin C. and Georgia Beverly and her stepmother, Louise Beverly, all who preceded her in death. She was past president of the Dental Auxiliary and served several times as president of the Christian Womens Fellowship at First Christian Church where she was a member and a deacon. She served several times as chairman of the 18 Hole Women Golfers at Chattanooga Golf and Country Club. She was a volunteer for many years with the Contact Telephone Ministry after being a member of the original training group. Services will be held at 1 p.m. today, May 2, 2014, at the First Christian Church in Chattanooga with Rev. Phil Summerlin officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the First Christian Church, 650 McCallie Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37403. Condolences and memories can be shared at www.williamsonandsons.com.
