Tyrus Wayne Murphy, 91, of Apison, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 9, 2014. He was born Dec. 17, 1922 to the late Edgar and Ollie Rhinehart Murphy and was a lifelong resident of Apison. Wayne was a member of Apison United Methodist church and an active member of the Wesley Sunday School Class. He began his lifelong farming career as a crop farmer with his father, and then started and operated a dairy farm for many years. He went to work for the state of Tennessee as a cattle inspector and continued to raise cattle throughout his life. Wayne was a member of the Apison Lions Club, the Ooltewah Masonic Lodge, and served many years on the Tennessee Farm Bureau board of directors. In 2009 he received the Hamilton County Agriculture Hall of Fame Award, which recognized his commitment to agriculture and service to his community. Wayne was preceded in death by two sisters, Genevieve Poe and Beatrice Hullander. He graduated in the 1940 class of Ooltewah High School, where he met his wife, Marie Meyer Murphy. Marie survives him in life along with daughters, Gayle (Jody) Whisenant, Sharon (Hartly) Varnell, Laura (Stuart) Ellis, and Lisa (Michael) Cline. Family meant the world to him and he was blessed with 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at Apison United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. today, May 10, 2014, with Rev. Todd Chancey officiating. Visitation following the service at the church.
