John Franklin "B.J." Bunton, Sr., 71, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2014, at his residence. He was born Nov. 21, 1942 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. John was of Baptist faith. He retired from the U.S. Army with the rank of Sargent First Class in 1983, after 21 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louella and Clifton Miller; sister Mary Louise Miller; son, John F. Bunton Jr.; and niece, Lacrissea Cunningham; brothers-in-law, Joseph Knox and George "Poot Nanny" Ball Sr. Survivors include his devoted wife, Cynthia Burton-Bunton; daughters, Alyssa Bunton, Ringgold, Ga., and Patricia Relford, of Kentucky; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, all of Kentucky; siblings, Wayne Miller and Meta Knox, both of Alabama; sisters-in-law, Delois Miller, of Alabama; Johnetta Ball, Gwen McCleskey, Vija Burton and Arabia Taylor, all of Chattanooga; brothers-in-law, Stephen Burton, of Tennessee; Frankie Burton, of Pennsylvania; Clyde Jones of Wisconsin; mother-in-law, Martha Burton; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Special thanks to Cheryl Johnson and Ruby Laymon of ResCare of Georgia; to the staff of Erlanger Hospital 7th Floor, MICU and a host of generous people behind the scenes. Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 16, 2014 in the Chapel. Interment in Chattanooga National Cemetery. The body will lie in state after noon today and the family will receive friends from 67 p.m. at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.
