J.R. Tallant

Tallant, 94, of Ooltewah, passed away Monday, May 26, 2014, at a local health care facility. He was the son of the late Jesse R. and Alice C. Tallant and was preceded in death by his brother, Clyde Tallant; and four sisters, Pauline Tallant Lewis, Hazel Beatrice Tallant, Dorothy Tallant Rutledge and Georgia Tallant Dixon. J.R. was a veteran of the United States Navy having served in World War II. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion, Post #95. He worked as a farmer and with his father, in the sheet metal and roofing business, prior to retiring from the Tennessee Department of Transportation. He was a member of Ooltewah Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn J. Tallant, of Ooltewah; four step-children, Sutton (Lynn) McCallie, of Lexington, S.C., Steve (Sheila) McCallie, of Hendersonville, N.C., David (Terrie) McCallie, of Ooltewah, Marie (Darren) Mitchell, of Knoxville; three stepgrandchildren, Christy (Houston) Foppiano, Jennifer (Mark) Haynes, Amy McCallie; four step-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Rev. John Burkett officiating. Burial will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery with military rites being conducted. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
