Col. Fred Cha lupsky

Col. Fred Chalupsky SOUTH PITTSBURG Col. Fred A. Chalupsky (Retired) passed away peacefully, Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015. Fred was preceded by his parents, Frank and Bessie; and his son, John E. Chalupsky. He is survived by his wife, Mildred, whom he married May 29th, 1943 in New Orleans; son, James F. Chalupsky; grandson, Stephen Chalupsky and wife, Kelly; and two great-grandchildren, Bryce and Brennen. Fred was born Jan. 26, 1919 in Buckingham, Iowa. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a law degree at the age of 21. He was elected Linn County Iowa county attorney before being drafted in WWII. After being drafted he went to officer candidate school becoming a lieutenant in the Army Medical Service Corps. During the war he served in the European theater and then for the occupation of Germany he served as military mayor of Fulda. Following the war he became a JAG officer serving for 27 years achieving the rank of colonel. During his career he had tours in Japan, again in Germany, Korea with several assignments in the Pentagon. He retired from the Army and became an administrative law judge where he was appointed chief judge of the Chattanooga office. Fred was recognized for over 50-years of service in the United States Government. During that time he maintained his status as a farmer. Fred Chalupsky acquired and developed land in Virginia, Tennessee and Iowa, always with a connection to historical conservation. He and his family preserved pre-Civil War log cabins, steam engines and historical sites. A memorial service, celebrating his life, will take place in Iowa.
