Virginia Cleek

Virginia C. Cleek, 82, of Manhattan, Kan., died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2015, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan. She was born on Jan. 22, 1933, in Chattanooga, the daughter of Dewey and Allie Campbell. Virginia was raised in Chattanooga where she attended local schools. For over 20 years Virginia was a school teacher for the Chattanooga public school system. During her career she had been a kindergarten teacher and later worked with special needs children. On Feb. 14, 1954, in Chattanooga, she was united in marriage to Marvin S. Cleek. He preceded her in death in December of 1981. While living in Chattanooga, Virginia was very active in numerous childrens activities at the Brainard Baptist Church. She was also was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and Garden Club, both in Chattanooga. In 1997, she moved to Manhattan, Kan., to live with her daughter and family. She soon became active with the Riley County Seniors Service Center, Quilting Club and Crafty Seniors. In recent years she has been a resident of Stoneybrook Assisted Living North where she touched many lives in so many ways. She will be fondly remembered for her sweet southern accent and wonderful southern hospitality which was reflected in her kindness and beautiful smile. Above all she loved the time spent with her daughter and family especially enjoying watching her only grandchild, Scot, grow up. She is survived by her daughter, Melinda Gammill and her husband, Roy, of Manhattan, Kan., and by a grandson, Scot Gammill, of Glendale, Ariz. Cremation is planned. In lieu of flowers memorials have been established for the Good Shepherd Hospice House and for the Faith Evangelical Free Church-Benevolent Fund.
