John Barbour

John Wilson "Jack" Barbour, 89, of Chattanooga, passed away peacefully Friday, April 24, 2015, at the Parkwood Retirement Apartments in Chattanooga. Jack was born on Oct. 4, 1925, in Pittsburgh, Pa. He attended Westinghouse High School and played the trumpet in their marching band. Jack took his GED after his 11th grade, allowing him to enlist in the Navy early at the age of 17, in 1942. He went on to serve as a Radioman 2nd Class, being deployed in the Battle of the Philippine Sea USS LCT 6 until the war ended. He was always proud of his service in the military and the opportunity to serve his country. Upon returning Jack attended and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Metallurgy. He then worked for Westinghouse Bettis Atomic Laboratory for 40 years, where he had the opportunity to work on Americas first nuclear power submarine, "The Nautilus". He met Jean while living in Pittsburgh, where they would marry and raise a family. Jack was a born-again Christian who served God by being a faithful husband, a good provider, and a faithful and loyal Presbyterian. For many years he served in the First Reformed Presbyterian Church in Penn Hills, Pa., as clerk of the Session. Upon retiring to Leesburg, Fla., in 1985 he continued his devotion to God and even assisted in the building of a new church. Since moving to Chattanooga, Jack and Jean joined the New City Fellowship Church and became part of their family. In his leisure, he enjoyed gardening, golf, cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers, and spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. Jack Barbour was truly blessed and loved by many. He was preceded in death by his father, John Barbour; mother, Annette (Nettie) Barbour; brothers, Charles, Harry, and Donald; sisters, Agnes and Betty; son, Jeffery M. Barbour. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife, Jean Barbour; sons, John, Scott, and Paul; daughters, Ruth and Beth Ann; grandchildren, Rachel, Tina, Heather, Michael, Jessica, Josh, Alison, Lauren, James Wilson (Dub), Lindsey and Ian; seven great-grandchildren; as well as many other loving relatives and friends. Funeral service will be held today, May 5, 2015, at 1:30 p.m. at the New City Fellowship Church, 2424 E. Third St., Chattanooga, TN 37404. Visitation and lunch with the family will be held prior from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the church as well. Following Mr. Barbours service he will be laid to rest at Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.
