Lee Cox

William "Lee" Cox, 93, passed away on Friday, May 22, 2015. Lee was born to the late Lee Cox and Veva Eaton Wheeler in Fabius, Ala., and has lived in Chickamauga Since 1986. He was a devoted Christian and choir member as a charter member of Fort Oglethorpe Baptist and now as a member of Bethel Baptist, Chickamauga. Lee earned his doctorate degree at the University of Tennessee, taught Spanish and other subjects for 39 years in Tennessee, Oregon and Georgia, before retiring in 1986. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a medic during WWII, was an active member of the Chickamauga Senior Center for the past eight years, was a member of the American Legion, Chickamauga Chapter and was a master gardener, artist and chef, who enjoyed his constant canine companions, "Benjamin" and "Bonnie". Lee was known to his family and friends as a gracious, kind, gentle Renaissance man, who will be missed greatly by all that knew him. Lee was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Marie Bussing Cox, in 2007, and sisters, Edna Earl Gamble and Juanita Sherrill. He is survived by his loving daughter, Terran Meadows-Thomas (Scott); sister, Jenene Childress; grandson, James William Ridgway; great-grandchildren, Jessica (David) Boyd, James William Ridgway II, and Maria Gabrielle Ridgway; great-great-grandchildren, Azariah, David and Elisha; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Frances Land. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, in the funeral home chapel, with Rev. Charles McElhaney and Rev. George Bussing officiating. Interment will follow in the Chattanooga National Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 4-8 p.m. and prior to the service on Tuesday. Arrangements by Wilson Funeral Home, J.
