Maggie Smartt

Maggie J. Sheffield Smartt, 102, passed away at the Hospice of Chattanooga on Aug. 28, 2015. She received her Bachelor of Science in Home Economics from Tennessee State and later earned a Masters Degree from Atlanta University. She did additional studies at Georgia State College, Hampton Institute, Virginia School of Arts Institution, University of Tennessee, Tennessee Technical University and Southern Missionary College. She was a life time member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority where she earned the distinction of becoming a Diamond Member, eighty years of timeless service to her community on the local and regional level. Mrs. Smartt was the first black President of the Chattanooga Retired Teachers Association. Funeral service will be Friday, Sept. 4, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Warren Chapel AME Church, 503 N Market St. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery with Rev. Pedro K. Basden officiating. Visitation will be today 1-6 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. Arrangements are by Hardwick & Sons Funeral Home, 913 East ML King Blvd., 423-267-1244.
