Meg Owen

Mary Earl Goodwyne "Meg" Owen, 99, formerly of Signal Mountain, died Dece. 16, 2015, in Winchester, Va. Mrs. Owen was born in 1916, in Forsyth, Ga., the daughter of the late Early Napoleon and Mary Lou Banks Goodwyne. She graduated from Bessie Tift College in 1937 with an A.B. degree in English and Diploma in Expression. Mrs. Owen taught speech in Calhoun and Forsyth and worked in the city office of Seaboard Railway in Atlanta during World War II. She married Rembert Reeve Owen on Nov. 28, 1944, and began a long career as a homemaker. She moved with her family to Signal Mountain in 1957. She gave many years of service to her church, Signal Crest United Methodist Church, where she was a charter member, the Signal Mountain Library and Chattanooga's Portable Meals. She moved to Winchester, Va., in 1998 and was an associate member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church. Mrs. Owen was preceded in death by her husband on Dec. 18, 1990; her son, Rembert Reeve Owen Jr.; sister, Ruth Goodwyne; brother, Shi G. Goodwyne; and nephew, Walter B. Goodwyne. Surviving is her daughter, Susan O. Utt (James) of Winchester, Va.; daughter-in-law, Kathy Owen of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Emily Reeve Thomas (Robert), Tyson James Utt (Jessica); great-grandchildren, Robert Reeve Thomas, William Wise Thomas, Lillian Christine Utt and Evelyn Marie Utt; niece, Georganne Wood (Jeff) of Knoxville, Tenn.; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2016, at Signal Crest United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dale Wyrick officiating. A reception will follow the service. Interment will be the following day at the Chattanooga National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Signal Crest United Methodist Church, 1005 Ridgeway Ave., Signal Mountain, TN 37377.
