Maureen Lee

Maureen Gerard Buckley Lee was born in Maryland on Dec. 27, 1952, and passed away at her home in Chattanooga on Sunday, June 25, 2017. Maureen graduated from Huntsville High School before studying at Jacksonville State University and Wallace State. While at Huntsville High, Maureen fell in love with her high school sweetheart, Walter Hugh Lee III, (Hugh) while they worked together on the set of West Side Story. They were married in Birmingham on Aug. 12, 1972, and stayed happily married for almost 45 years. Maureen was all about family. She lovingly raised three children, Walter H. Lee IV (Susan), Tara Lee Shapach (Emil) and Justin Francis Lee (Dana). She adored her five grandchildren so very much, Connor Ryan (15), Jordan Elizabeth (14), Austin James (12), Alyssa Grace (9) and Jonah Michael (5); her brother, Frank Buckley; sisters, Patricia Jones (Rick), Regina Crump (Jay) and sister-in-law, Sara Adams (Chris); several nieces, nephews and cousins. Maureen cherished the annual beach trips, family dinners, and attending anything she could that had to do with her children and grandchildren. In addition she was a member of Beta Sigma Phi (Xi Alpha Iota chapter in Birmingham) until moving to Chattanooga where she joined the Chattanooga chapter and loved all of her sorority sisters. She was also on the Grandparent Advisory Board for Rett Syndrome.org and attended 2 of their national conferences in support of Alyssa Grace. Maureen was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Francis J Buckley Jr. and Mary Doherty Buckley; her sister, Mary Rita Jones; parents-in-law, Walter H. Lee Jr. and Betty Williams Lee; sister-in-law, Joan Mead Buckley and brother-in-law, Linton Williams Lee. A celebration of her life will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 2, at St. Mark United Methodist Church in Vestavia Hills, AL.
