Shirley Spivey

DAYTON — Shirley Jeanelle Thomison Spivey, 86, passed away March 12, 2017, at Rhea County Medical Center. Born in Dayton, she was a lifelong resident of Rhea County and attended Rhea Central High School for two years before graduating from Girls Preparatory School. She graduated from Ward-Belmont in Nashville, Tenn. and the University of Tennessee Knoxville. She taught science, biology, and home economics for 38 years at Rhea Central High School, and later, Rhea County High School. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church and a member of the Rhea County Historical and Genealogical Society, the Alpha Kappa Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, and the Retired Teachers Association, among other clubs. She was loved and respected by many and will be missed greatly. She was preceded in death by Allen Burnette “Sonny” Spivey, her husband of 51 years; and two great-grandson twins, Forrest and Finley Harris. Survivors include two children, Walter Spivey (Lynne), of Dayton, and Susan Holder (Steffan), of Dayton; and one sister, Joanne Kimsey, of Cabot, Ark. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Rebecca Harris (Elmer), of Dayton, Daniel Spivey (Elizabeth), of Chattanooga, Sarah Toliver (James), of Harker Heights, Texas, Steffan Holder Jr., of Rossville, Ga., and Jennifer Holder, of Chattanooga. She is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Autumn Spivey, Fletcher Harris and Addelynne Grace Toliver. Funeral service is Thursday, March 16, 2017, at 6 p.m., in the Chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home. Visitation is Thursday, March 16, 2017, from Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home.
