Jo Ann DeFriese

Jo Ann DeFriese, born in Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2017, at the age of 81. She passed away resting comfortably in the bed surrounded by family and loved ones. A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Jo Ann was preceded in death by her husband (Laban DeFriese), Father (Charles Gamble), brother (Kenneth Gamble) and Mother (Ruby Pendergrass Gamble). She was survived by four children (Jerry, Kenny, Sam, and Julie DeFriese), and six grandchildren (Grey, Moises, Victor, Gisella, Lupea, and Braxton); and sister, (Donna Ruth Gamble). As a successful businesswoman, in 1985 Jo Ann co-founded (with husband Laban DeFriese) America’s first Caviar Company (Continental Caviar). Her company was one of two companies from Tennessee to ever be on the front page of the Wall Street Journal and in 1986 was portrayed in a historic special on Peter Jennings ABC World News. Jo Ann was an accomplished pianist, violinist, and soloist in the church choir. She played by ear and also had the rare musical gift of “perfect pitch”. (Meaning she could name the note on any instrument or vocalist just be hearing it). She sang and played piano and organ at several different Church’s growing up and into her adult life, including playing organ on multiple occasions at First Presbyterian Church (downtown Chattanooga) where she was a member for over 30 years. In 1999, Jo Ann moved to Franklin, Tenn., with her husband and considered it her home city away from home. Living in Williamson County, in 2007, (age 71), she competed and won the crown for the Miss Senior Williamson County Pageant. She played the piano and sang her favorite hymn, “The Wonder of You” to a standing ovation and packed house. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church (downtown Chattanooga) on Saturday, May 23, 2017, with Pastor Dick Fisher performing the memorial service. A reception will begin at 11:30 a.m. and the service will be at 1 p.m., followed by a reception after the service at the chapel. The honorary pallbearers are Lindy Henley, Kip Henley, Brent Henley, Eddie Turner, Steve Cotter, Jim Baker, John Hill, and Brent Gamble.
