Tommie Collins-Boyd

Tommie L. Collins-Boyd, 91, passed away in her home surrounded by her loving family Oct. 23, 2017. She was born Nov. 1, 1925 in Chattanooga. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Arthur A. Collins; second husband, Thomas W. Boyd; son Roland L. Collins; stepson, Robert Hardaway. She is survived by her sons, Preston A. Collins and wife, Harriet of Chattanooga and Elder Robert A. Collins and wife, Patricia of Albuquerque, N.M.; 14 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Tommie L. Collins-Boyd had been actively involved in the Prince Hall Masonic Family for many years; the Worthy Matron of White Lily Chapter No. 284, Order of the Eastern Star, she led the chapter on the path to excellence, working untiringly to promote the virtues of the Order. As Past Worthy Matron, she continued to set an example for her sisters. Mrs. Boyd was very active with the Chattanooga Matron’s Council; the District, La Prader County No. 44 – Heroines of Jericho; Bessie Peak Guild No. 11; Alfrader Court No. 65; and Hyksos Court No. 112, Daughters of Isis. Her involvement in the Masonic family she attributed to God being the head of her life. Mrs. Boyd graduated from Howard High School of Chattanooga; attended Tennessee State University (Nashville); and Zion College. After many years of service, she retired from Erlanger Hospital. Following her retirement, Mrs. Boyd returned to Erlanger Hospital as a volunteer, always assisting others. The body will lie-in-state after noon Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2017 in the funeral home chapel, and The Order Of The Eastern Star OE service will take place at 6 p.m. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2017 at noon at Bethel AME Church with Pastor A. J. Holman officiating. A Committal service will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Chattanooga National Cemetery. Arrangements by John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Avenue, 423-622-9995.
