David Windle

David Franklin Windle, 79, of Signal Mountain, passed peacefully at home surrounded by his beloved family, on Friday, Sept. 8, 2017. David graduated from Baylor School. He earned a degree in accounting from the University of Tennessee and worked for decades in executive positions in the carpet industry with such companies as Collins & Aikman, Pacific Mills and Montcrest Mills. He volunteered as an Associate Probation Officer for the Hamilton County Juvenile Court, and he served as Treasurer of the Signal Mountain Jaycees. He was an active member of St. Augustine Catholic Church where he served as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, member of the choir, leader for Cursillo and SEARCH and President of the Parish Council. David was profoundly spiritual and valued his Catholic faith. He was extraordinarily devoted to his family, and he relished being a father to his kids as well as “Granddaddy” to his 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was also a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. He will be remembered for his love of boating at the lake, traveling to the beach, and camping in his RV. He loved his family and friends in a way that inspired devotion and his legacy will live for generations to come. David was preceded in death by his parents, Edward W. Windle and Margaret Hanaway Windle; the love of his life and his cherished wife of 47 years, Janet Leland Windle; his daughter, Jane Miles; and his son, David L. Windle. David is survived by his three daughters, Kathleen (Billy) Driver, of Roanoke, Va., Meg (Taylor) Walker, of Signal Mountain and Anne (Brett) Lawrence, of Flat Top Mountain; son-in-law, Chris Miles, of Signal Mountain; grandchildren, David (Samantha) Driver, Daniel Driver, Kaitlin Driver, Lance Lawson, Sarah Miles, Christopher Miles, Lauren (Chris) Mansolf, Lindsey Walker, Kristen (Robert) Mazza, Rebecca Lawrence, Catherine Lawrence, Grace Lawrence, Stephen Lawrence; great-grandchildren, Jackson Mansolf, Harper Mansolf, Margaret Mazza and Oliver Miles; his brother, Edward (Patricia) W. Windle Jr., and many nieces and nephews. The family would like the thank Hearth Hospice for all the compassionate care they provided to David during the past few months. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 15, 2017, at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Monsignor Al Humbrecht serving as the chief celebrant. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017, at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society, Holy Spirit Catholic Church, or Mary Ellen Locher Foundation. Arrangements are by the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 404 S. Moore Road.
