Robert Mathieson

Robert (Mat) John Mathieson, 53, of Signal Mountain, passed away suddenly as the result of a heart attack on Sept. 13, 2017, while on a teaching assignment in Oswego, N.Y. Mat was born in Bridgeport, Conn., but was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga, Tenn. During his earlier years Mat traveled extensively with his parents residing for some time in Iran and Japan. Mat graduated from Red Bank High School in 1982. Following school he served in the United States Air Force. Honor Guard at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Mat then transferred to the United States Coast Guard where he completed active service at Elizabeth City in 1985, having served during Desert Storm and Artic Patrols and then following graduation at Chattanooga State College, Mat pursued a Career teaching Industrial Electronics. Mat was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ben and Jessie Mathieson, of Aberdeen, Scotland; and Bert and Frances Riith, of Greenwich, Conn. Mat is survived by his parents, Frances M. and Robert U. Mathieson; former wife, Tracy, mother of son, Justin R. and daughters, Trisha and Sasha. The family will receive friends today, Sept. 21, 2017, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Lane Funeral Home, Ashland Terrace. A graveside service will be conducted on Friday, Oct. 6, 2017, at 1 p.m. at Chattanooga National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hixson High School, Wrestling department.
