Patricia Byington

Mary Patricia Hopton Byington, 90, of Chattanooga, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2017. Patricia was born March 17, 1927, in Nashville, Tenn. She grew up in Brentwood, Tenn., attending Peabody Demonstration School, graduating in 1944. She married William Hunter Byington April 7, 1951 at the Church of the Advent in Nashville. Over the next 15 years, she and Hunter had seven children: William Hunter Byington Jr. (Barbara), Harold Vivian Byington (Josie), Mary Louise Byington Phillips (Winfred), Edith Catherine Byington, Patrick Hunter Byington (Kathy) and Richard Henry Byington. Warren Hunter passed away in infancy. Pat and Hunter were on the move. After beginning married life on various army bases, they settled in Chattanooga, Nashville, Montgomery, Florence and Sheffield, Ala., before finally returning to Chattanooga in 1987 where they remained for their last years. They traveled extensively (U.S. and England) to be actively in touch with family. Hunter and Pat were active members of Christ Episcopal Church in Chattanooga, where they were a common sight each Sunday in the front pew. For many years, she was an associate of the Convent of the Transfiguration and involved with the Episcopal Church women. Pat was a generous soul who worked as a hospice volunteer and enjoyed bridge, reading, knitting and all things British. In April 2017, Pat and Hunter celebrated 66 years of marriage. Hunter passed away with Pat by his side on May 22 of this year. Pat is survived by her six children, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial service is set for Sept. 23, at Christ Church Episcopal at 11 a.m. Visitation is one hour before in the parish hall.
