Bette Jean Strickland

CHICAGO, Ill. — Bette Jean Strickland (nee Wheeler), 83 years old; formerly of Chattanooga, Tenn., and resided in Chicago since 1957, passed away Nov. 24, 2018. Bette's mother, Dr. Emma Wheeler, was an influential African American physician who is famously known for establishing the first Black hospitals in Chattanooga. A housing development in Chattanooga was named in her honor. Retired teacher with the Chicago Board of Education; graduate of Howard High School of Chattanooga, Tenn., (Class of 1952) and graduated from Knoxville college in Tennessee; earned two Master degrees, one from Northern Illinois University and one from Northwestern; member and longterm parishioner of St. James Church in Bronzeville. Memorial Service to be held on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 10 a.m. at St. James Church, 2907 S Wabash Ave, Chicago, IL 60616. Inurnment at Highland Cemetery in Chattanooga, Tenn.
