Katherine Scasbrick

Katherine (Kay) Welch Scasbrick, of Chattanooga passed away in her home of over 70 years, Dec. 14, 2018. The eleventh of twelve children, Kay was born Nov. 9, 1920, to John and Carrie Welch of Hixson, Tenn., graduated Hixson High School and married the late Charles William Scasbrick in 1942. The couple built a home in nearby Red Bank where they lived the remainder of their lives, raising children and enjoying fellowship and worshipping at Red Bank Baptist Church. Charles later passed in December 2002. Kay loved helping and teaching and was devoted to students at Red Bank and Kirkman High Schools. On any given school day, she could be found walking students through diagraming a sentence, working on a math equation, or quite possibly be found helping the ladies properly apply lipstick in the girls bathroom. She proudly sang first soprano in her church choir for 40 years, and enjoyed taking fitness classes at Downtown YMCA until her late 80’s, until health would no longer permit. Kay had a keen eye for detail and a knack for primping her home with flowers she arranged and dressing her family in clothing that she had carefully and thoughtfully sewn. After losing her father and many siblings to ALS, Kay worked closely with Dr. Siddique of Duke University, researching genealogy and familial patterns and possible causes of the disease. True to her nature, she loved the daily challenge of a cryptoquote, playing cards and Scrabble. She continued playing until she passed. Katherine had a playful spirit and loved laughing and spending time with family. She is survived by her son, Gary Scasbrick; daughter, Carol Scasbrick; grandchildren: Jennifer Thomas, Kris Trentham, Kenny Vickers, Carl McGill and Glenn Scasbrick; nine great grandchildren also survive. The family will receive friends Tuesday, Dec. 18, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Lane Funeral Home on Ashland Terrace. Funeral Services will be at 1 p.m. She will be laid to rest at 2:30 p.m. at Chattanooga National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Contributions can be made to Kindred Hospice Foundation. kindredhealthcare.com Arrangements entrusted to Lane Funeral Home ~ Ashland Terrace. 601 Ashland Terrace, Chattanooga, Tenn. 37415. www.lanefh.com
