Paul Bergmann

Paul Brent Bergmann, 35, of Hixson, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2018, in Wilmington, N.C. Brent was born and raised in Chattanooga, Tenn. He attended St. Peter’s School and graduated from The Baylor School. Brent was involved in many activities throughout his life, including sports, music, theatre and church. Brent started singing with the Chattanooga Boys’ Choir, and later participated in the Baylor School’s Glee Club, winning both the 8th and 12th grade vocal music awards. He participated in the Honors Choir and was a soloist in the Governor’s School. Brent was a Benwood Scholar at Baylor and a member of the Red Circle. Sports was Brent’s passion and he participated in wrestling, football, and basketball, but excelled in both soccer and baseball. He was a member of the Hixson Athletic Association Dizzy Dean baseball league for many years, where he was an All-Star on several state championship teams. An exceptional soccer player, Brent was a member of several state championship select soccer teams. At Baylor, he was a member of the 2000 state champion varsity soccer team, when he was also selected to the all-tournament team. His talent as a soccer player was also recognized when he was selected to the Olympic Development Team. Brent attended MTSU where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. His studies were interrupted when he joined the United States Marine Corps. He served two tours of duty, one in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. He was a decorated warrior. Following his honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, he completed his education at Cape Fear Community College where he earned an Associates of Arts degree. He then completed a B.A. in Communication Studies at UNC-Wilmington. Most recently, Brent was working as a peer counselor for the Veterans Administration in Wilmington N.C., helping other veterans of the War on Terror. Brent was first baptized as a baby at First Centenary United Methodist Church. Later, as a teenager at Hixson United Methodist Church, he chose to be baptized a second time, this time in the Tennessee River. Brent was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Paul Bergmann, Jr. Taken too soon, Brent is loved and cherished by his family and many friends. Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Paul and Jamie Bergmann, and sister Kelly. He is also survived by his paternal grandmother, Bertha Ingrid Margaret Bergmann; maternal grandparents, Dr. Leonard Martinec, (retired colonel, US Army), and his wife Sara Roy Martinec; his aunt and uncle, Drs. Amy and Julian Billings; aunt, Linda Martinec; aunt, Sharon Harwood; uncle and aunt, Alan and Beth Bergmann; the love of his life and soulmate, Hannah Painter; and many cousins and friends who loved him deeply. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 5, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. Services will follow at 4 p.m. on Monday at the North Chapel with Reverend Mark Davis officiating. Private Burial will be at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
