Gerald Webb

Gerald Webb Sr., 81, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Jan. 18, 2018, at his residence. He was born May 31, 1936, in Chattanooga. Accepting Christ at an early age, Gerald was baptized at Rose of Sharon Baptist Church where he remained a member until the time of his passing. Gerald graduated salutatorian from Booker T. Washington High School in Chattanooga. He then enlisted into the United States Army where he honorably served his country during the Korean Conflict. He served in the first desegregated unit at Fort Benning, Ga. where he trained officers in biochemical warfare. Upon his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, he was employed by DuPont where he was promoted several times becoming the plant’s first African-American supervisor, where he eventually retired after 28 years of service. Known as the “neighborhood’s daddy” he and wife Barbara truly had love for every child who grew up in Eastdale. Every child was welcome in their home for a meal, advice, or simply love. A gifted carpenter, he was able to take a simple piece of wood and create woodworks to be enjoyed for a lifetime. He was especially known for giving distinct and expertly crafted wooden bowls to friends and loved ones. He will be most missed and remembered for his sharp wit and brilliant sense of humor. Whether discussing sports, politics, or simply telling a story, Gerald was wise, kind and respected by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Christine Webb (Aaron) Swope and wife, Barbara Hayes Webb. He will be lovingly remembered by children, Sherryl Lynn (Jeffrey) Hill, Crystal Dotson, Pamela Webb, David L. (Marilyn) Webb, Gerald (Casey) Webb II, and Aaron (Rashida Marie) Webb; grandchildren, Jolanda (Korey) Coffey, Crystal JuNeice, Jeffrey Hill II, Caitlyn Clear, Nia, Olivia, Allison, Sydney, Shelby, Summer, Ella, and Gerald Webb III; great-grandchildren, Jakoria, Jaden, Jayla Coffey, Eli Dotson and Asher Buchanan; special friend, Dezora Rhynes; sister-in-law, Glenda Lyons; brother-in-law, Samuel Smith Sr.; and brother-in-law and close friend, Eddie Gould; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. He will lie-in-state today at noon at Orchard Knob Missionary Baptist Church with the funeral to follow at 1 p.m. with Pastor Carlos Williams officiating and Pastor Charles Moore as the eulogist. Burial in Chattanooga National Cemetery. Arrangements are by Taylor Funeral Home of Chattanooga, Inc.
