Nelia White

Mrs. Nelia “Neely” White, 96, of Chattanooga, passed away June 27, 2018, surrounded by four generations of family she loved so well. Born in Waycross, Ga., Neely was introduced early to the vital importance of family, love, and laughter. She married the love of her life, Mr. H. Glenn White, in 1938, and moved to Chattanooga, where she raised their four children with unconditional devotion. Those lucky enough to have Neely as their kindergarten teacher at Concord Baptist Church would remember Neely for her gentle, forgiving spirit and the sweetest voice to ever sing “Happy Birthday.” Neely’s doting children, Robert, Glenda, Richard, and Peggy, gave Neely and Glenn 10 grandchildren, and Neely became “Nana” to her 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. “Nana” meant story-time, bottomless sweet tea, and homemade biscuits. Simply put, “Nana” meant love. Nana was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Glenn, and her dear daughter, Glenda. She is survived by her sons, Robert and Richard; daughter, Peggy; and the many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who always felt so special and safe in her presence. Hers was a transcendent love, and so continues in the hearts of those she leaves behind. Nana White, you were as pretty as the impatiens you so tenderly cared for, as humble as the saltines in your cracker tin, and as constant as the faithful, old clock ticking steadily beneath the stories and laughter that filled up your den and our hearts. We love you forever. The family wishes to thank Hearth Hospice, Woodland Terrace, and Life Care Center of Collegedale for their care during these final weeks and days. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 30, 2018, in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home, 7454 East Brainerd Road. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Cemetery.
