Hershel Dollar
Hershel D. Dollar, 77, passed on to be with his Lord on Nov. 13, 2018, at a local Chattanooga Alzheimer’s facility.
He was born on Aug. 2, 1941, in Magee, Miss., and was raised on the farm in Magee.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lavonne Dollar and father, Carlos “Red” Dollar; and brother, Paul David.
Survivors include his wife, Carol; sons, Hershel Jason Dollar and Jeremiah Eric
Dollar; brothers, Ray Dollar, Doug Dollar, and Mark Dollar; sister, Carolyn D.
Strayham; and many nieces and nephews.
He graduated from Mississippi State University in Agriculture. He served his country as a MP in the U.S. Army Reserves. Afterwards he became a soil scientist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where he and others mapped out soils, county by county, for the government. Later he specialized in classifying soils by
using augers to determine where septic tanks would go for homes and subdivisions. In 1992 Hershel studied more in depth and went into a private soil
consulting business with numerous young men who worked for him. He began work in Tavares, Fla., in 1965, later transferred to Merritt Island, Fla., where he
attended the First Baptist Church of Merritt Island with Pastor Dr. Adrian Rogers, where he met his wife, Carol. They were married in 1969 in Knoxville and would
have been married 49 years in December 2018. He worked in many counties in
Florida and was transferred to Broward County, Fort Lauderdale, then later to Jacksonville, Fla., Nashville, Tenn., and then to Chattanooga, Tenn. He was a member of Red Bank Baptist Church and the men’s Sunday School class then taught by Bill
Johnson. Hershel was a Bible scholar and had a deep interest in Bible prophecy. His favorite bible verse that he wanted everyone to know is John 6:40
The family would love to thank Josh, Billy, Annie, Wilma, Glenda, Faye, Jennifer, Sandy, Darlene, Coni, Carla and the rest of the nursing/caregiving staff who cared
for Hershel, along with Brannon, Rusty, Travis, and Sarah from Hearth Hospice.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Hixson.
Funeral services will
be on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Bryan Johnson and Jeremy Dollar officiating. Interment will follow immediately in
Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
