Rita Kerr

Rita Fillauer Kerr of Lookout Mountain, TN, died Wednesday, September 12, 2018, at her home surrounded by family and friends. She was born on December 1, 1928, in Chattanooga TN. She was preceded in death by her parents: Marie and George Fillauer, both her brothers: George and Carlton Fillauer, her husband of 32 years, George Kerr, and several of her treasured friends with whom she spent most of her life. Rita was a well-known resident of Lookout Mountain and Chattanooga. She volunteered and served in multiple capacities for many different service organizations. She was a President of the Woodland Garden Club. She served as Business Manager for the Lookout Mountain Breeze Publication. Rita was President of the Lookout Mountain PTA, in addition to volunteering for many other jobs and fundraisers for the elementary school. She played piano for the annual Christmas pageant, and for many other plays and musical performances given by Lookout Mountain Elementary. In Chattanooga, Rita was a member of the Symphony Guild and a Volunteer at Erlanger Hospital and the Red Cross, as a nurse. Like her beloved Mother, Rita was a wonderful cook and gardener. She frequently hosted people at her home and was always a gracious host. Although she had many hobbies, some of her favorites were traveling, playing bridge, and tennis. Rita attended Nazareth Academy in Nazareth KY and graduated from Notre Dame High School in Chattanooga. She attended Marymount College in Tarrytown New York and graduated with a Spanish degree. After graduation, she worked for her dad for a year at Fillauer Surgical Supply as a bookkeeper. She is survived by her three children: Melanie Wilcox Landers, C. Mel Wilcox, MD, and Debbie Wilcox Tillard. She is also survived by her nephew Karl Fillauer, her two nieces: Terri Fillauer Baker and Kathy Fillauer Brooks, her husband’s children: Tom Kerr and Debbie Lucas, 11 grandchildren and one great-grandson. Funeral services will be held at the Church of the Good Shepard, Lookout Mountain, TN on Wednesday, Septmember 19, 2018, at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Metropolitan Ministries, 1112 McCallie Avenue, 37404. You may also contribute to the Chambliss Center for Children, 315 Gillespie Road, Chattanooga, TN 37401, and Chattanooga Community Kitchen, 727 East 11 Th Street, Chattanooga TN 37401.
