Jesse Gibbs

SPRING CITY — Jesse Gibbs, 93, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2018, at Memorial Health Care System in Chattanooga. Born in Kentucky, Jesse was the son of the late Ancil and Alice Ellison Gibbs. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp serving in Iwo Jima during World War II. Jesse was a graduate of the Cumberland College in Williamsburg, Ky., and the University of Tennessee. He and his wife, Nina, moved from Chattanooga to the Spring City community in 1952. Jesse was an electrical engineer and retired from TVA in 1984. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #203 and a charter member of the Rhea County Rescue Squad. Jesse formerly served as a board member of the Rhea County Hospital Board. He was a member of the Spring City United Methodist Church and attended the Pairs and Spares Sunday School Class. Jesse was preceded in death by his wife, Nina Gibbs; sisters, Bethel Taylor and Ethel Johnson; and brothers, Lee, Albert, Maynard, Chester, Robert, Delbert, Arthur and Charlie Gibbs. Survivors include his sons, Edward (Linda) Gibbs and Randall Gibbs, both of Spring City; daughter, Patricia (Kelton) Owen, of Murfreesboro; brother, Lonzo Gibbs, of Aiken, S.C.; sister, Zetta Fincher of Corbin, Ky.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services are Thursday, Sept. 27, 2018, at 1 p.m. at the Spring City United Methodist Church with Rev. Dale Wyrick and Rev. John Eldridge officiating. Interment with military honors will be Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in the Spring City Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church.
