JoAnne Johnson

JoAnne Barrett Johnson of Chattanooga, Tennessee died August 6, 2019 at her home at The Lantern of Collegedale. Ninety three years young, she lived her life with humor, dignity and grace. She loved dancing, music, warm weather, a clever conversation, reading, travel (especially to the beach and Hilton Head!), and her most of all, her family. She was known for her wry smile and the twinkle in her blue eyes. She was a native of Sylva, North Carolina and had lived in Chattanooga for over 50 years. She had also resided in Lakeland, Florida for 15 years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga. While living in North Carolina, she attended Mars Hill College and graduated from Western Carolina College in Cullowhee. She then taught school in North Carolina, Atlanta, Georgia, and Chattanooga. She later received her Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and taught 10 years in North Georgia schools, primarily as a Guidance Counselor. For many years, JoAnne traveled to her winter home in Lakeland, Florida and after her marriage to Maxwell Johnson, a Canadian; she traveled to her summer home in Ontario, Canada with stops in-between to spend time with her family in Chattanooga. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maxwell Johnson of Embro, Ontario, Canada and a son, Scott Cooper Terrell of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Survivors include one son, Guy Kenneth Terrell, Jr. (Priscilla) of Phoenix, Arizona; two daughters, Julianne Terrell Miller (Tim) of Chattanooga, Tennessee and Cassandra Jeanne Keller (Alan) of Melbourne, Florida; one sister Mrs. Jeanne Evans of Chattanooga, Tennessee; two granddaughters Lindsey Miller Alley (Nick) and Rachel Miller both of Chattanooga, Tennessee. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. A private family service will be held on Saturday, prior to the internment at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
