Joan Farrell

Joan Duff Farrell, 64, of Chattanooga passed away at Hospice Care Center of Chattanooga on August 6, 2019 after a long battle with kidney disease and other health issues. Joan was born on June 3, 1955 in Atlanta, GA to Edythe Herbison Farrell of Newburgh, NY, and Floyd Livingston Farrell of Patterson, NJ. She was a graduate of Peachtree High School in Dunwoody, GA, and then attended the University of Georgia, where she earned Bachelors and Masters degrees in the Arts. Joan moved to the Chattanooga area in 1978, where she taught at the high school level for over 35 years in the Hamilton County School System. She was a very imaginative and creative person, with many interests from painting to sculpture. She enjoyed going to estate auctions and was especially attracted to vintage jewelry. Joan was proud of her beautiful garden at her home in the Willow Trace Community, where she had a great group of close friends. Pets were special to Joan and were companions for most of her life. A devoted Christian, she was an active member of several area churches over the years, the last being Pilgrim Congregational Church. Despite difficulties with her health, she retained her quick wit and great sense of humor. Her determination was an inspiration to all. She will be missed. Preceded in death by her parents, she is survived by her son, John Farrell Spencer, his wife Rebecca and her granddaughter, Helena of Chattanooga; her sister, Susan Thacker and her husband Bill, a niece, Leslie Pine and a nephew, Scott Thacker of Texas. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Monday, August 12, 2019 in the funeral home chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Kidney Foundation of the Greater Chattanooga Area, www.kidneyfoundation.com, would be appreciated.
