Helen Newland

Helen Elizabeth Newland “Lib”, beloved sister and aunt, passed away on July 12, 2019 in Chattanooga, TN, at the age of 82. Lib was born in Raleigh, NC in 1937, the third of four children born to Helen and Bill Newland. The family soon moved to Charlotte, NC and Lib was a proud resident of Charlotte the majority of her life. Lib attended East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte and was awarded the honor of sophomore and junior beauty. Her plan was to attend art school in NYC after graduation. Lib’s dreams and hopes were never fully realized because of her lifelong battle with a crippling mental illness. Lib was a hard worker, assisting with patient care at her mother’s “Newland Rest Home”. Lib loved spending time painting or singing with her musical family, but her favorite activity was working in the yard. She toiled long, hard hours, fighting a losing battle with kudzu, but winning the prize of having the greenest lawn in the neighborhood. She reluctantly gave up cutting the grass with a push mower at the age of 76. She moved to Lookout Mountain, TN with her sister, Anna, in 2013 to be closer to Anna’s family, who adored and cared for beloved “Aunt Libby”. Health problems finally required her to live at Lifecare of Red Bank, where she received exceptional care until her death. Lib is survived by her devoted sister, Anna Newland Coulter; niece Jan Ellis Weaver, Karen Newland Kiser, Kym Newland Beckham, Charlene Farris, Jane Newland Mundell, Judy Farris and nephews Allen Newland and Chip Newland; Donna Croxton, faithful friend to Lib for 50 years; and many cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews and extended family. She was preceded in death by her father, William Calhoun Newland II, her mother, Helen Elizabeth Newland, and two brothers, William Calhoun Newland III and Lawrence Allen Newland. A Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel of Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church, Saturday, August 31 at 2:00pm. Family will receive visitors after the service. Arrangements by W.L. Wilson & Sons Funeral Home-Fort Oglethorpe.
