Charles Hyde

Charles Wilbur Hyde, (72), of Signal Mountain, Tenn., died peacefully June 19, 2019, at his home with his family by his side, after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was preceded in death by his father, Anson Roberts Hyde; his mother, Laura Jean Swauger; his sister, Sue Safferty; and his brother, Doug Hyde. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Marie Lieb Hyde; his four children, Allison Hyde (Mark) McKenna, Lesley Hyde, Emily Hyde (Todd) Dockery and Anson (Neely) Hyde; seven grandchildren, Evan McKenna, Carly McKenna, Allie McKenna, Sophia Dockery, Charles Brittan Hyde, Olivia Dockery and Charley Mae Hyde; and sisters Cindy Fawsett, Ashland, Va., and JoAnn Massino, Tracy’s Landing, Md. Charles was born in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 29, 1946. He graduated from St. Albans School in Washington, D.C. in 1964. Charles studied for two years at the University of Delaware before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1966 during the height of the Vietnam War. After two tours in Vietnam, he returned to his studies and graduated from George Mason University in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Charles had a successful 23-year career in sales and marketing at IBM, where he managed accounts for TVA, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the National Institutes of Health. He retired and launched his second career, teaming up with Marie to run the Bread Basket, a small Signal Mountain bakery they started in their home kitchen in 1989. Charles never did anything half-hearted. He was an avid Washington Redskins fan and shook the house jumping when they won the Super Bowl in 1983. He rotated through passions like UT football, NASCAR (until Jeff Gordon retired) and the Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. He could throw a 4th of July party like none other. He found lasting friendships when he joined the Tri-State Military Vehicle Club, joining other veterans and civilians in their shared passion for vintage military vehicles. He served as the club president for several years and participated in many car shows and parades. Above all, he loved his family. His life will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26, at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 630 Mississippi Ave., Signal Mountain, TN. The family will receive visitors the hour before the service. Immediately following, Charles will be laid to rest with military honors at 2:30 p.m. at the Chattanooga National Cemetery, 1200 Bailey Ave, Chattanooga, TN Arrangements are entrusted to Lane Funeral Home, 601 Ashland Terrace, Chattanooga, TN 37415. 423-877-3524.
