Marguerite Meadows

Marguerite Gillespie Meadows, 96, beloved wife of Dudley Meadows, died June 17, 2019, at Alexian Village, Signal Mountain, where she had lived since 2002. Marguerite's was a full life. Born in Petersburg, Tennessee, to Joseph and Margaret Dean Gillespie, she was raised along with three brothers and a sister on a farm in Savannah. She was educated at Queens College in Charlotte, where she pledged Chi Omega, and at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where she met Dudley. On June 5th they celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary. Following university, Marguerite worked for a time in Oak Ridge on the Manhattan Project as a chemist. After marriage and starting a family, she went back to work, teaching math and science for more than 30 years, first on the opening faculty of Signal Mountain Junior High and later at several Atlanta high schools. A longtime member of Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church Circle and Signal Mountain Garden Club, in retirement she also took up Bridge. Marguerite was an avid traveler and, together with Dudley, managed to see many parts of the world, traveling independently, with family and on group tours. She was 'Aunt Tats' to a host of nieces, nephews and their children and for over 60 years the annual family reunion was a highlight of her year. She leaves behind husband Dudley, son Dudley Meadows, Jr, of Little Rock, daughter Janice Meadows and son-in-law Malcolm Green, of Hamilton, NZ, grandson Charles Meadows III and great-granddaughter Cora Meadows, of Chicago, and brother John Gillespie, of Savannah. The family thanks the staff of Alexian Village, Alexian Home Care and Alexian Health Care, who looked after Marguerite so lovingly. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm, July 6, at Signal Mountain Presbyterian. Arrangements are under the care of the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.
